You will be starting your tour at 4:00 pm from Saraii Village. A guide will pick you up and transfer you to a nearby Chena plantation village. Wear something comfortable; and ensure that you take mosquito repellent, a change of clothes for the night, a towel and basic toiletries with you.
You will be met by a farmer, who will show you around the village and take you to his home; where you can leave your overnight bag. After this, he will show you around his fields and explain more about Chena cultivation. Chena takes advantage of the monsoon seasons every year. Dating back to the times of the early tribal communities; this method of cultivation ensures that crops can be planted throughout the year instead of just during the rainy seasons. Major crops are planted shortly before the monsoons and make the most of the rainwater; while minor crops which produce results more quickly are planted in the time in between the monsoons, and make use of remaining moisture in the soil and water from wells. The farmer will explain the process you in more detail.
After this walk through the fields, you will be returning to the farmer’s hut at around 5:30 pm to pick up your spare clothes, towel and toiletries for a dip in the nearby stream. This shallow stream in the woods is a very attractive location; and you can get refreshed in the cool clear water that runs through.
At approximately 6:00 pm you will be returning to the farmer’s hut to pick up your things and take it to the place you will be staying. You can spray on your mosquito repellant, as you watch the sun sink into the horizon and dusk enfolds the fields. Kerosene oil lamps will be lit, and you can watch the farmer’s wife cook dinner in clay pots over a wood fire. You will then be able to have a meal full of Sri Lankan goodness, made from greens, vegetables and grains from the local farmers. You can also opt for a dessert of fresh fruit if you wish.
At 8:00 pm, the farmer will take you to the open chena hut where you will be sleeping. You will be using the light of the lamps which will be hung up on the roof of the hut. Your bedding will be arranged on mats. You can simply watch the stars, or sing a few songs before you’re ready to sleep. You will be bedding down watching the stars blinking in the dark blue heavens.
