This tour takes you to depths of the Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve, on a tough hike in search of rare birdlife. Let your senses feast on the ever-changing weather conditions, vibrant colours and ever-present sounds of this tropical rainforest. Explore its verdant mysteries to discover the many endemic flora and fauna that inhabit this hidden paradise. Visit the bird research centre within the rainforest to know more about the hundreds of birdlife there. Take home your memories and colourful photographs; the only things that can be taken from this protected zone.
Your tour will start at 6:00 am the entrance of Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve. Transport to the trailhead will not be provided as part of the tour and will need to be acquired separately. Ensure that you wear waterproof boots or sneakers with a good grip, warm clothes and rain jackets or rain slickers as the hike is prone to sudden showers. Also, take insect repellant and salt for leeches. Water bottles can be handy too.
The Sinharaja Rainforest is the largest and most famed of all tropical rainforests found in Sri Lanka. It is a designated Biosphere Reserve and a UNICEF World Heritage Site; renowned for its rare and ancient plant life, over 250 species of birds, and the many varieties of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. 29 out of the 34 endemic bird species of Sri Lanka, call Sinharaja home. The Sinharaja Bird Waves are the largest mixed species feeding flocks of birds in the world. This rich ecosphere of 11.187 hectares, receives between 3000mm – 6000mm of rainfall per year. Sudden downpours are common here; whilst the mean temperature hovers between 18°C-27°C. Only the faintest amount of sunshine reaches the ground cover through the thick canopy; resulting in most plants being canopy trees or woody climbers.
You will meet with your nature guide at the trailhead and will be given a brief description about the park and the nature trails there. They will advise you on any precautions and safety instructions during this time. You will be starting your hike at 6:15 am. The hike will be quite tough, and you will get to see many rare flora and fauna. The guide will also stop occasionally to rest a little and take a drink of water. You will also get to see the best little hollows where rare birds can often be seen and occasionally their nesting places.
You will also get a chance to take photographs of the rainforest and the birds. At 10:00 am you will be reaching the Bird Research Centre deep with the forest. There you will learn more about the birds that inhabit Sinharaja and their nesting habits. You will also gain more understanding of the endemic birds that nest there and identifying them. After spending some time there you will be refuelling with some energy bars and a bottle of water.
You will leave the centre shortly after this, hiking back through the rainforest. The hike back will have no stops, and you will return to the entrance of the rainforest by 11:45 am. You will be given more refreshments once you get there, which you can use to get rid of any exhaustion. The tour will be completed at 12:00 pm at the entrance.
