Meet at the gate of Yala National Park at 5:30am or 2:30pm to begin your safari adventure. Yala National Park is one of the preeminent spots in Sri Lanka to view a broad variety of wildlife. Spot colorful storks perched at the shores of the lagoon near dozing crocodiles. Admire fan-tailed peacocks in the woods where monkeys leap and chatter. There are 32 species of mammals in the park, including threatened species such as sloth bears, leopards, elephants, water buffalos, wild boars, spotted deers, sambars, and golden jackals.

If you’re lucky, gaze at distinct Sri Lankan leopards, which can be seen throughout the park. Yala National Park’s Block 1 has recorded the highest density of leopards among the populations scattered in the wildlife parks of Sri Lanka.

View the large population of elephants that wander the park. Yala National Park is also rich in bird life, with around 130 species. Catch sight of raptors, including crested serpent eagles and white-bellied sea eagles. Around the lagoons, perhaps see flamingos, pelicans, spoonbills, rare black-necked storks, grey herons, purple herons, night herons, and darters.

This tour gives you the opportunity to experience Sri Lanka’s Chena tradition. Learn the intricacies of chena plantation and its history. Watch a field fresh meal get cooked. You will be starting your experience at 11:00 am from the lobby of Saraii Village. You’re advised to wear comfortable clothes and bring a hat or cap to avoid getting sunburnt.  Bringing some sunscreen lotion would help too. Your guide will pick you up and take you to a nearby local village.

The farmers there make their living from chena plantations. Chena is a method of agriculture that makes the most of the monsoon seasons every year. This farming method dates back to the early tribal communities of the island, millennia ago. There are two types of chena plantations; the Greater Chena that takes advantage of the rains during the two monsoons, and the Lesser Chena where farmers plant quick-growing crops that use less water during the times between the monsoons.

Once you get to the village you will be meeting up with a local farmer, who will be taking you around the fields. He will explain how chena plantation occurs and the seasons of planting. You will be learning more about the monsoons and the crops that are planted during chena plantation. You will also get to see how the water is collected and allocated when rain occurs, and the complications that arise with and excess or lack of rain. While speaking to the farmer, you will also be able to take some great photos with the fields as a backdrop.

After walking through the fields for approximately an hour, you will be taken to a chena hut that within the fields. Chena huts are rustic, open-sided huts used by farmers to watch over their fields, and to get some rest in the shade at the sun’s highest point. Sometimes they also use it to stay overnight in to protect the crops from damage by wildlife, such as elephants. However, this one is where you will be having lunch. You will find the food being cooked on open wood fires.

You can watch as the preparations, or help lay the tables if you wish. Lunch will be ready for consumption by 12:30 pm. You will be eating on clean lotus leaves or banana leaves, laid over woven trays. The meal will consist of traditional rice, obtained from chena plantation, and vegetables of the season from the fields; all cooked to perfection to create delicious local cuisine. There will also be fish, freshly caught from the lake nearby and cooked. You can eat at ease, with great views of the fields, and plenty of fresh air. Dessert will be fresh fruits of the season; there might also be curd and treacle.

After lunch, you will be leaving the fields at 1:15 pm. You will get back to Saraii Village by 1:30 pm completing the tour.

You will be starting your tour at 4:00 pm from Saraii Village. A guide will pick you up and transfer you to a nearby Chena plantation village. Wear something comfortable; and ensure that you take mosquito repellent, a change of clothes for the night, a towel and basic toiletries with you.

You will be met by a farmer, who will show you around the village and take you to his home; where you can leave your overnight bag. After this, he will show you around his fields and explain more about Chena cultivation. Chena takes advantage of the monsoon seasons every year. Dating back to the times of the early tribal communities; this method of cultivation ensures that crops can be planted throughout the year instead of just during the rainy seasons. Major crops are planted shortly before the monsoons and make the most of the rainwater; while minor crops which produce results more quickly are planted in the time in between the monsoons, and make use of remaining moisture in the soil and water from wells. The farmer will explain the process you in more detail.

After this walk through the fields, you will be returning to the farmer’s hut at around 5:30 pm to pick up your spare clothes, towel and toiletries for a dip in the nearby stream. This shallow stream in the woods is a very attractive location; and you can get refreshed in the cool clear water that runs through.

At approximately 6:00 pm you will be returning to the farmer’s hut to pick up your things and take it to the place you will be staying. You can spray on your mosquito repellant, as you watch the sun sink into the horizon and dusk enfolds the fields. Kerosene oil lamps will be lit, and you can watch the farmer’s wife cook dinner in clay pots over a wood fire. You will then be able to have a meal full of Sri Lankan goodness, made from greens, vegetables and grains from the local farmers. You can also opt for a dessert of fresh fruit if you wish.

At 8:00 pm, the farmer will take you to the open chena hut where you will be sleeping. You will be using the light of the lamps which will be hung up on the roof of the hut. Your bedding will be arranged on mats. You can simply watch the stars, or sing a few songs before you’re ready to sleep. You will be bedding down watching the stars blinking in the dark blue heavens.

You will be woken up at 6:00 am in the morning, and you will have time to brush your teeth before your vehicle comes to pick you up at 6:30 am. You will be driven to Saraii Village where you will have a hearty and scrumptious breakfast spread with both local and Continental cuisines waiting for you. You can tuck in at ease.

Your entire tour will be completed at 8:00 am after breakfast.

Cycle along the buffer zone (also known as the Elephant Fence) enveloping the boundaries of Yala National Sanctuary. See wildlife such as deer, elephants, wild boar, wild buffalo; and possibly even a Sri Lankan leopard of which the Yala Sanctuary has a pretty large population. As there will be no engine sounds, you will be able to avoid scaring the fauna. This also means that you will have more sightings

While en route you will also be visiting the remains of Sithulpauwa Temple. The temple lies in an area which was one of Sri Lanka's earliest cities, Ruhunu. The archaeological dig has revealed over 60 inscriptions that point towards the site having been a huge monastery of the 2nd century BC; holding over 10,000 people at its peak. You will be able to see the ruins and some of the inscriptions.

You will complete your safari by 5:00 pm, cycling a distance of approximately 30 km depending on where you are staying. You will finish the tour back at your hotel.

Yala  National  Park is the  most visited  and second  largest national park in Sri  Lanka.  Yala National Park (block 1) is situated in the southeast region of the country and lies in Southern Province and Uva Province. The park covers 979 square kilometres (378 sq. mi) and is located about 300 kilometres (190 mi) from Colombo. Yala was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in1900, and, along with Wilpattu was one of the first two national parks in Sri Lanka, having been designated in 1938. The park is best known for its variety of wild animals. It is important for the conservation of Sri Lankan Elephants and aquatic birds.

The park is situated in the dry semi-arid climatic region and rain is received mainly during the northeast monsoon. Yala hosts a variety of ecosystems ranging from moist monsoon forests to freshwater and marine wetlands. It is one of the 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Sri Lanka. Yala harbours 215 bird species including six endemic species of Sri Lanka. The number of mammals that have been   recorded from   the park   is   44,   and it has one of the highest leopard densities in the world.
